SABRES & CUTLASSES for rent

[Prices are for the first 30 days' rental].

Choice of blade style will affect the actual grip and pommel used for the hilt chosen, and not all hilts can accept every type of blade. The sword you receive may have a different grip or pommel than that shown in the photo.

("what kind of blade do I need?") blade choices

Did you know that... heavy cavalry units used a straight light blade; light cavalry units used heavy curved blades. Why? Because heavy cavalry charged at enemy infantry and impaled them as they stood or ran. Light cavalry charged at enemy cavalry and slashed and cut at them as they rode.

Unfortunately, the fight worthy curved blade is no longer being imported to the US, so availability may be tight.

Do you need only the sword, or some way to attach it to the actor as well? Once you're done selecting the hilt and blade, take a look at our  leather goods  rental section which has sashes, belts, frogs and scabbards

600 - LIGHT CAVALRY 1860 - what we think of as the typical Civil War sabre, and the most common sabre hilt world-wide. Although this one was modeled after a specific style, "semi-basket" hilts such as these go back to the early 1700's. The three curved pieces arching from the knuckle-bow provide fairly good protection for the hand. Best all-around sabre look, and can be fitted with a wide selection of fight-worthy blades.

costume – [$13.00]    epee or demi-epee – [$17.00]    schlaeger – [$30.68]    sabre or briquet cutlass – [$39.11]    vorpal – [$37.63]    fantasy cutlass – [$27.32]    broadsword – [29.42]

608- MARINE CORPS CADET – A beautiful sword in nickel finish. Shown as a dress sword (1.6 lbs, 29" blade, 35" overall), but we can fit a light dueling blade on it.

costume – [$20.84]   epee or demi-epee – [$24.84]    schlaeger – [$34.32]    vorpal – [$45.47]

606 - HIGH OFFICER’S SWORD - [very limited availability] presentation pieces (each one looks different) given to European officers from the mid-1800’s to the present. None are fight worthy and all are costly. The most expensive way to get one sword on-stage. costume  [soon to go to the "Attic"]  – [$56.80]

611 - INFANTRY OFFICER - not only the cavalry used sabres. Every branch of service had some sort of sword available, though only the officers usually wore them in battle, and then only for effect.

costume – [$26.74]    epee or demi-epee – [$30.74]    schlaeger – [$44.42]    sabre or briquet cutlass – [$52.84]    vorpal – [51.37]    fantasy cutlass – [$41.05]    broadsword – [43.16]

604- WATERLOO - pattern 1796 designed by the British, and saw extensive use by both sides in the Napoleonic wars. Once a sabre hilt is invented, it is forever used by someone somewhere, so this sabre can be used for a wide historic range.

costume – [$23.79]    epee or demi-epee – [$27.79]    schlaeger – [$41.47]    sabre or briquet cutlass – [$49.89]    vorpal – [48.42]    fantasy cutlass – [$38.11]    broadsword – [40.21]

615- SEAMAN’S HANGER - [extremely limited availability]     The very basic cutlass distributed to sailors when under imminent attack

costume – [$18.53]    sabre or briquet cutlass – [$44.63]     epee or demi-epee – [$22.53]

503 - BARBARY COAST -e  we had some fun with this one. Basic cutlasses are boring, but this one has panache - and is amazingly strong.

costume – [$10.09]    epee or demi-epee – [$13.39]    schlaeger – [$24.70]    vorpal – [30.43]    fantasy cutlass – [$21.91]    curved sabre or briquet cutlass – [$24.35]

451 - HIGHLANDER BASKET - The distinctively Scottish infantry sabre was originally classified as a broadsword, for it was never meant to be used by cavalry. A variant of the mortuary swords of the continent and basket hilt swords of England. It is the weapon needed for the sword dance in Brigadoon, but please ask about the problems of actually trying to have dancers use it. It is sometimes misnamed a "claymore".

costume – [$25.68]    epee or demi-epee – [$29.68]    schlaeger – [$43.37]    curved sabre or briquet cutlass – [$42.95]    vorpal – [50.32]    fantasy cutlass – [$40.00]   broadsword – [42.11]

634- US NAVY CUTLASS - take a standard cavalry sabre, shorten the blade so it doesn’t get caught in the ship’s rigging, and fill-in the hand-guard to provide a bit more protection, and this is what you end up with. Actually, almost any of the sabre or rapier guards or even the dagger guards can be fitted with a shorter blade and be a "cutlass" (which means "cut-rope").

costume – [$20.84]    curved sabre or briquet cutlass – [$38.11]    schlaeger – [$38.53]    epee or demi-epee – [$24.84]      vorpal – [45.47]

502 - CAPTAIN MORGAN - e  We just couldn't take it anymore. This shape is very popular, but the aluminum versions normally sold break down far too fast and the stainless steel ones were just too costly. We have built these ourselves of 18 gauge steel, so they are far more resistant to damage than the others - and we can still provide it at a great price.

costume – [$10.09]    epee or demi-epee – [$13.39]    schlaeger – [$24.70]    vorpal – [30.43]    fantasy cutlass – [$21.91]    curved sabre or briquet cutlass – [$24.35]

This is a really good example of how we can outfit a sword according to the fight needs and also the "look" of the show. The first picture is a standard modern Olympic sabre sport-grip and pommel; then the same guard but a hefty pommel and grip to match to better balance the strong cutlass blade; and finally again the same guard, but with a light epee blade and "older" looking pommel and grip. All of them started out with the same guard.

Again - two swords, same guard, different blades:

falchion on the left, epee on the right
