My name is Richard Pallaziol, and I'm the owner of Weapons of Choice. I've been a stage combat choreographer and fight instructor for twenty-three years. In that time I've set the fight scenes for some 300 productions throughout California, and have taught the techniques of stage combat to literally tens of thousands of actors at every level, from middle school students to professional equity actors. That profession led me to this one, renting weapons to theatres, since I could never find just the right weapons I needed for the fights I was choreographing. I figured that other theatres were in the same position. So in 1990, Weapons of Choice was born.
I still work as a fight choreographer, and my services can be arranged for your theatre or film.
Instruction can be a single day seminar, or a longer commitment of time in any of the stage combat disciplines. I teach them primarily as acting classes, not fighting classes, for I firmly believe that any actor can learn any part of staged fighting. However, it is best to keep in mind that certain forms are better suited to different levels of experience. I like to break them down into the following categories:
Beginning: Unarmed Rapier Broadsword (2-handed) Quarterstaff
Intermediate: Broadsword and Shield Rapier and Dagger Smallsword Military Sabre
Advanced: Knife/Commando Eastern Martial Arts Katana Unusual & Mixed weapons
Also, I have come to believe that stage combat is not appropriate until the actor has reached a certain level of personal maturity and can appreciate it as being one tool among many that helps bring a theatrical production to life. For that reason, I do not teach to non-actors, nor to students under the age of sixteen.
This could be a simple tussle between two actors or a full "battle-royale" using maces and broadswords with the entire cast. The fee is based on the number of rehearsals you need for me to attend and the distance from Napa. If items are needed from Weapons of Choice, those rental fees are usually waived.
Before you call I should let you know a little about what I charge. Generally speaking, I work within the San Francisco/Sacramento area. Within San/Sac, the actual fee depends on the travel distance from Napa and the number of hours per rehearsal, but you can rough it out using the following baseline - $65 per hour, with a $250 per day minimum. Anything outside that area and I have to consider being there overnight, so then we're looking at $900 per day minimum, whether you work me for one hour or twelve.]
